Show next weekend....should we go? Are we ready?
I've been trying to condition and train my 22-yr old Paso Fino gelding lately for the fair on the first week of August, which I've been planning on going to long before I bought my Thoroughbred dressage/trail mare. Having been laid up for 7 weeks with a broken collarbone (which is now FINALLY healed thank god), I was only able to work on his responsiveness to aids from the ground. Turning in the turnaround box for Trail Class, backing up, etc. Now that I can ride again, I can school him again.
I want to go to some shows this summer for the experience and nothing more...What I'm planning on doing is eventing, but not with my 23-yr old Paso Fino gelding obviously. I have fair planned; I'm doing Trail, Easy-Gaited Pleasure, and some fun events like Egg&spoon and phone book races. That leaves me plenty of time to get him muscled up, as he's out of shape now. What are good exercies for that? I've heard long trots but he is gaited so he does a TWH gait, a fox trot, and a Fino.
Then there's a show next weekend that my 4-H club is putting on. I have to go anyway to help with ring crew and gates, and I think I'm going to bring Arthur and show him in Trail, Halter, and Egg&Spoon (they don't have any gaited classes anymore....how convenient lol). I don't know if he's ready for it though. Is he? Is there any way to condition an undermuscled (especially along the topline) 22-yr old in 10 days? It just doesn't seem feasable. I might have to scratch him from Open Halter, but I really don't want to as his conformation is good, he's just undermuscled. What exercises can help us with this?
I'll try to take some videos today of us riding Western so you can have at it with the critique. If the raining lets up I'll ask the neighbors to practice in their arena as they don't have horses anymore and never use it anyway.
