Chapter 1
I stuck my nose in the newly laid snow. This was the first time I'd ever seen such a thing. I didn't know Mother Nature could make such a beautiful but harsh event as snowfall. My hooves flicked up the ice as I galloped through the forested path my herd apparently took each winter. I had a spring birthday. My mum always says that a butterfly landed on my nose as soon as I took my first steps into the wilderness.Personally I don't believe it because the butterflies never come near me now. I guess I am a bit of a handful.
"Sky! Get here at once!" Oh no... Mum!
" You've gone too far this time missy! Why did you go out of the herd's sight? You could have been killed for heavens sake! Oh my gosh... wait until your father hears about this."
"But he doesn't need to!" I protested indignantly, but before I could finish, my father's booming call came from behind me. He was furious.
"Oh yes I do Sky. Tell me everything!" He had a calm voice, but you could tell how annoyed, well more... worried he was, as he was agitatedly swivelling his silky black ears to and fro.
" Dad, I was just having some fun. I've never seen snow before and so I was making the most of it because mum says that snow melts and isn't there anymore unless new snow comes. I also didn't know that the herd couldn't see me because I thought they were following."
"Fair enough Sky, but stay near the herd next time!" A feeling of relief swept through me as dad smiled and pawed the ground, His great feathered hooves making the earth shake beneath us.But before he could gallop off, mum caught him with a shill whinny.
"So your just going to let her off the hook? She could have killed herself and you're not going to punish her?!"
"Just leave the filly alone!"
"I can't believe you-" I couldn't hear them anymore. They always argued. Now their quarrelling just melted into the background noises of singing birds and creaking trees... CREAKING TREES! Suddenly the tree above them snapped and crackled, its thin layers of bark separating one by one.
"SKY!" I could hear my parents desperately calling for me to get out of the way, but I couldn't. Fear struck me like I wolf at my neck and I couldn't move!
" Sky move away, run quick!" Horses are meant to be flight animals, but at at that moment, I wasn't. Stuck to the ground with super glue, I could only flatten my ears and look, terrified at the trunk snapping, coming ever closer to me.:hide:
