Five years ago we lost our beautiful old Shire mare Mollie. She was a gentle giant with a giving spirit and a patience and wisdom that I have seldom seen in any other living creature...two legged or four.
She was a chronic laminitic when she came to us at sixteen...but we were able to give her a good few more glorious summers before she was sadly taken by that cruel disease. She suffered all without complaint, until my wife and I had to make the saddest decision of our lives so far...This is for her... 'Till we meet again old friend.'
Wait for me, please don’t run so fast!
Though you are free to fly now, I am still tied.
We ran together until infirmity stilled your canter:
The pain making a test for your good nature.
Now you gallop across pastures without end,
While I am the one who must be still...and remember.

You need no saddle no or bridle,
You need no rugs to keep you from the cold.
I never dreamed that you would be the one to bridle and saddle me
With memories of your gentleness to keep me warm.
I won’t fear the gnaw of old age at my bones as my own twilight fades
And the world spins on leaving me behind.
I will simply wait to be free like you
And together we’ll gallop bareback across all eternity.
