Chapter 1 Before Rodeo
We pulled the six horse trailer into Berry’s Stadium, where our rodeo team would be competing at tomorrow. Elliot and I are the representatives of the Jack Daniels Rodeo Team, one of our tasks was to deliver the horses. This rodeo, will make the decision, if our members attention the State rodeo. We get the horses in their stalls that have fresh sawdust, hay and water, we won’t be able to grain them until after our vet check. We had a hour until the vet check, so first we go get the living quarters in the trailer sorted out, where Elliot and I will stay for the night, once it’s finished we go back to the barn.
I took on the task of getting all the needed vet records in front of each stall, while Elliot started to get the grain. Our rodeo organization, has inspections before each rodeo, checking vet records, weight, and feed. After getting the paper work sorted out for each horse I look over to where Elliot was. Elliot is eighteen years old, has short black hair, blue eyes, stands six feet and two inches and probably weights one hundred and sixty pounds. Many of the girls thinks he is one the best looking guys around, and envy that I’m his best friend. The girl who envy’s me the most is Emily South and she just so happens to walk up to Elliot. The thing about Emily is she has a major crush on Elliot, at this point Elliot isn’t looking for a relationship. He doesn’t want to settle down with anyone, instead he wants to go make a career on the rodeo circuit. Elliot turns his head and looks at me as if he wants help. I make my way over to where they was.
“Elliot do you want to get a bite to eat with me tonight? My parents are going to go to the dinner in town and I figured I would just dine here.” Emily asks Elliot and then turns and gives me an evil look. Emily is seventeen years old, 5 foot tall and five inches, and weights one hundred and seventy pounds.
“I can’t, Grace and I already have plans, anyways I have to get back to work.” Elliot tells Emily, I can tell he is wanting her to leave him alone.
“Elliot, I still have to groom two horses and clean all of their feet before the inspection, do you think you can lend a hand?” I asked Elliot and then walked away as to leave him and Emily alone so she can figure it out on her own, when in reality the horses were ready. Elliot and I have been best friends since before we can remember. I believe Emily got the hint as she walked away in the direction of the Hall.
“Thanks, Grace, nice saving me, and we are going to the Diner Hall, just us once the inspection is over.” Elliot tells me and similes, his mother lends him enough money for us to eat on our whole stay as it’s a favor for her. The inspector walks over so we walk out of the stall, we noticed the inspector was no one other than Emily’s Uncle.
“I was told I’m looking at 6 horses for the Jack Daniel’s Rodeo Team.” Scott South, tells us then he turns to the horses. “Well, each horse looks to have a good weight and no injuries.” He says and starts picking up paperwork.
“Yes, I am Grace Johnson and this is Elliot Daniels the representatives of the Jack Daniels Rodeo Team. Health records are here for all six horses, here is a sample of each one’s feed and hay. Some are privately owned so they have different feeds.” I tell the inspector, while he looks it all over. He then nods his head.
“I see no problem, We will watch each horse in warm up for any signs of drugs or lameness. If we think there is a problem the horse will be tested, by a vet. I don’t think this group will have an issue with any of that. Also, we are going to start randomly testing horses at the rodeo, I will know which horses are getting tested tomorrow.” Scott tells us, then winks and walks off. Scott seemed nice, but I wonder if it wasn’t because of Emily. Elliot gives each horse their evening grain, while I pick up the paper work.
“I wonder why he warned us about the random testing, anyone who knows anything about this stable will know that doesn’t effect us. Never once have we failed a test and if we do, Mom would look into it closely.” Elliot tells me, but of course I know this. I have competed with this team since I was ten years old.
“I don’t know, but I believe he is trying to get on your good side for Emily.” I tell Emily and he just walks off.
We finished feeding and caring for the horses, which six horses was actually a break from the normal herd of horses. In exchange for boarding, my horse Sassie, I work at the farm after working my job. Elliot and I head to the diner. Emily spotted us as soon as we walked in and walked over towards us.
“Well, Elliot when I invited you, I didn’t invite her to, you know how I feel about uninvited people coming.” Emily tells Elliot, and Elliot smirks, the one that tells me something is up. Elliot then puts his arm around me.
“Well, Emily, Let’s get one thing straight, I didn’t come here for you, Grace and I came together, plus if you invite me then that invites Grace as we are a two and one deal. So you can forget about me coming to dinner with you tonight and especially if Grace isn’t invited, there would be no reason for dinner.” Elliot tells Emily and we start to walk off towards a booth for two, when Emily stops us.
“Elliot, you don’t know me that well I guess and another thing is aren’t you guys like brother and sister.” Emily looks at us and walks away. In a way she was right, but my mother was only a god-mother to Elliot, but with a fall-out between my father and Misty, she never became my god-mother, instead we had to move away for 5 years.
During dinner, Elliot and I both talked about our game plans, I will just be riding in barrel racing and pole bending, normally I also complete in goat roping, but my swing has been off. Elliot is completing in barrel racing on his sister’s horse, then team roping, and bull riding, he already has been asked to attend finals in bronco riding, which is what he enjoys the most. We also have Elliot’s two sister’s barrel racing, Cody bull riding and team roping and Mark roping, plus Caleb bronco riding. Elliot and I got up and we saw Emily look over at me, so Elliot quietly grabbed my hand as we walked out.
“Well, that’s a close one with her, at least she won’t be going pro, so how many times until we aren’t completing with her.” Elliot tells me as we go to the trailer. I change into a tank top and exercise shorts while Elliot also put some shorts on to sleep in and we both laid down. The living quarters only had one small bed, but it worked for us. I laid my head on Elliot’s chest. His mother knew we were smart and trusted us, we had a friend relationship only, but outsiders begged to difference.
“Emily would freak if she knew we was sleeping in the same bed, but she believes we are more than friends.” Elliot tells me and similes, Elliot can be flirty at times, and it was completely normal for us to flirt. While we would flirt, we would never step out of a friendship relationship.
“Yea, I just wonder how long until, Emily has the rumor around the whole rodeo grounds. Our parents would probably freak, but I guess we will handle that later.” I tell Elliot and he places his arm around me. We always felt so comfortable around each other and before someone really got to know us they always though we was together.
“You know, you do understand me, and this does feel right, so maybe we should keep this up, but not in the open, no one can know.” Elliot similes and rubs my arm. With that, I smile back and he grads my hand and kisses it. We fell asleep with my head on his chest and him holding my hand.
