I am having a serious problem with a neighbor horse ripping off my gelding's fly mask. I tried all kinds, supermask, double velcro, so on and so forth. I also tried deterents such as hot sauce, apple bitters spray with no success. The mask is taken off of him within 2 hours... or as soon as I leave. I know it is the neghboring horse because the mask is usually in their stall...there are also chew marks on it.
I'm terribly frustrated!!! Does anyone have any creative ideas that have worked in this type of predicament??
Yes, thank you, I did try the halter over the mask. The mare pulled the halter off (she pulled so hard that the clip on the thorat latch broke!!) Arrrrr...what to do?!
Is the velcro getting undone, or is the elastic allowing the fly mask to come off?
My geldings pull each others fly masks off when they are elastic--when there is just velcro they tend to stay on longer.
I bought a Cashel fly mask for my little arab cross, and his fly mask stays on for the most part. I guess it is harder to slip it over his head. Another thing I like about the Cashel is that the velcro strap lies flat against the mask, making it very difficult for a horse to get a hold of it to pull it off.
If worse came to worse, I would just put some of the roll-on fly repellent on his face. The other horse can't rip that off.

I have tried Cashels, unfortunately they do not hold up as well as the Farnman supermask II's. The double velcro helps. BUT, they still manage to rip it off!!

We have seen the neighbor horse yank on it until its off. There are bite marks where she rips at the seams
Yes, you are right, he should probably back up and not allow her to do this, but who knows, maybe he wnats it off?!
If you're willing to try more kinds of masks, I'd recommend the Horse Sense brand. My friend uses them and loves them. They were designed by a woman who was sick of the masks she was using falling apart. They have the velcro closures and are heavy-duty. Nothing fancy but "smart". I did a quick search and found them for sale at www.horsesuppliesusa.com
It sounds like the safest option here, is to not put a mask on your horse; I have my mare on Apple Cider Vinegar, and there is a HUGE difference in how many bugs chew on her compared to the other horses, who are not on the ACV...I put about two tablespoons in her pellets each morning. She might have a few bugs on her, when the other horses will have tons of them bothering them. Worth a shot, atleast. It's cheap, and it works, pretty well.
