I've never seen a saddle with that type of protrusion on the cantle, but I do know if the tree's broken there's no way it can be fixed.

The only thing it would be good for with a broken tree is decorative, which means regardless of its age and history it's not worth much, if anything.

What SR said: broken tree is just that - broken. You can't sell or trade one simply because it shouldn't be anywhere near the horse.

It is one of the dozens of different "trooper" military style saddles. The british exported them to every country they colonized with subtle differences in every different place.

Some were specially designed by officers to suit their own preferences and looked more like traditional English saddles.

The extended cantle was for attaching a portmanteau bag and other equipment/bed roll.

It is military but might not be English. And I can only bring up one picture, from which it's impossible to tell whether the tree is broken or not. I doubt it - those saddles were made to take a pounding. And they didn't have a conventional tree, being made with front and rear arch attached to a pair of side rails and the seat suspended between the arches.

Need more pics to be certain.

I've looked at these and there's no way you can tell if the tree's broken from them - because of the panel type (usually fitted to officer's rather than troopers' saddles, which is also true of the brass cantle trim) you'd need to strip the saddle to be sure.

If you're keen to identify it try posting a picture on the Society of the Military Horse site and ask their help :)
