This is just a personal preference, but I refuse to ride a green horse without one. I've seen quite a few instances where a horse ducked his head and went to bucking in a saddle without a back cinch and the saddle and rider both got bucked off over the horse's head.

Not only that, but I find it's easier to introduce all the tack at once (back cinch, breast collar) instead of getting them started under saddle and then introducing it later.

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog: http://robertsontraining.blogspot.com/

I also want to put it that you never really want a loose cinch, make sure there is no gap between the cinch and the horse, i've heard horror stories of people out trail riding and a stick going up between the horse and cinch and the horse being speared, or getting stuck or it causing a bucking fit.
