My Clydesdale has massive lips. She is currently in a 6 inch snaffle. I've just ordered a 6 1/4 inch French link eggbutt in hopes this will be nicer for her. I'm always conscious of her massive mouth so was wondering if anyone else had experience in this??
I would go bitless like my other guys but she really has no clue so at the moment I will stick with a bit :)
Teeth are all sweet btw, she just has a huge, floppy mouth :eek_color:

I've got a clyde cross that looks pretty much like a mini clyde and find that bitting isn't easy with her because she's got a fleshy mouth and also a short mouth. If your horse is light on your hands then you might find a thinner French link works better than a thicker one if that's what you currently have. I'm using a Myler comfort snaffle on ours but she really goes better in an English hackamore
If you want more lip and tongue relief you could try a Micklem bridle using the clips

At the moment she is in a single jointed snaffle as it was the only 6inch bit I could find! I prefer French links so hopefully the one I've ordered suites her. She's not light in the hands right now, very good with her leg commands though. She was a plough horse/broodmare before I got her so she's just getting used this riding stuff :)

I had my Percheron in a 6-1/2" double jointed snaffle, and he did not like it at all. I then moved him to a Myler combination bit: it was a #33... he did really well in it, and I loved the soft feel. I did have to special order it, though, which was not cheap. I sent it with him when he went to his new home, just to try and keep his life happy.

When my Haflinger came, I tried him in several bits, including a double jointed snaffle, but it was the same story. He also has thick lips and a thick tongue. I asked his previous owner what she rode him in, and she sent me a picture of his bit: a comfort snaffle #33, but with different cheekpieces. So I got the Haflinger the same bit as my Percheron, (only an inch smaller), and he seems to like it.

You have good polo and the craftsmen/women behind that.

Or find one in Aus. I know they have custom bit and spur makers. I've seen nice custom work from there.

Or find one here (US) and have someone you trust on the board here be the go-between.
