THE BEST home made bareback pad!

I've been obsessing over bareback pads lately as I can not find one that I absolutely love so I started designing my own. I've been researching different materials and I found an awesome affordable way to make you're own.

I went to walmart and bought 2 bath mats for $10 each and they are about the size of a dressage pad. I placed the sticky side to the horse and then laid the second one on top with the sticky side up. I secured them with a 2 stirrup leathers.

I plan on sewing the sides together so the top pad doesn't slip but leaving a hole to feed the stirrup leathers through. I'm going to leave the front and back ends open so that I can insert a pad for extra cushion if I need to.

It is AWESOME to ride on. With just the two mats, you can feel the back bone slightly so that you can align it with yours and make sure you stay centered. The sticky material makes a huge difference that even beginners feel secure riding on it. I gave a lesson on it yesterday and the little girl (who is very timid) loved it and was able to practice the rising trot with out stirrups easier and actually felt comfortable cantering.

I would worry that the 'sticky' side might pull hairs funny and annoy some horses.

Using stirrups with a bareback pad creates a false sense of security.

She is not using stirrups. The stirrup leathers are acting as a surcingle.

My daughter will LOVE this! Last week she rode bareback (TRULY bareback) with NADA between her and the horse. Afterwards all she said was "ouch." I will show her this post!
