I went to a tack store earlier this summer to get a bit, and the girl helping me told me to saran wrap or vet wrap the bit so that it didnt get bite marks on it, and they preferred it to be done.

Velvet, are you talking about Happy Mouth bits?

If you can, take a measure and measure the bits at the store. Or, take the bit you've been using and make sure the inside of the rings measures the same. Is there otherwise no difference in the joint systems of the two bits? If they join a little differently, or if they curve the mouth a little differently they will also fit differently in the mouth.

Thanks guys, I have now realised that different bits fit differently (kinda obvious really), even if they are the same length! I have come to the conclusion that I will go up a size for a loose ring snaffle. :)

Most probably you'll have to go 1/4 up, not the 1, and I'd even doubt 1/2.
