I personally use a rope cross under version. The jaw straps release well and it's really great out on trail.

I have a Dr. Cooks that I use. I don't know if it's because I have a synthetic version, but mine only puts pressure on the nose band while the cheek straps stay loose. Since some people have problems with poll pressure though, I guess I'm lucky.
Keep in mind that I use the bitless because my horse is very responsive and only requires slight pressure. I don't know how it would work if you had to pull strongly on it.

I have seen some people get a good, close fitting leather halter and put reins on it. I think this is a good idea as long as you are confident in the horse not ignoring it. You could probably do the same thing with your normal halter.

When I got my girl in Aug she had never had a bit in her mouth- I wanted to train her without one until I needed to move up, so I bought this on Ebay:

And I love love love it! She is so light and responsive, I do not see us riding in anything else for a long time, if ever. I like that I can tie her with it, use one rein as a "failsafe" when working on seat cues, or use both. I had them make me matching reins that are flat braid, since I ride english.
