Could someone explain to me the action of a few bits? I'm trying to think ot out logically but for some reason I just can't picture how the action of these work. The first is a Pelham, the second is pictured, as I dont know what to call it. What would the pictured bit be used for? Much appreciated.
Pelham allows both leverage and direct pressure. Various mouth pieces will add more functionality.
Pictured is a loose ring mullen mouth. It's a bit of an interesting combination as horses who like to play with bits like loose rings, while horses who like stability like mullen mouths. Could be used for a horse with a shallow pallet who dislikes tongue pressure. It's a snaffle, so direct pressure. Pretty mild bit.
Both would be for general riding, assuming legal for the discipline.
The Kimberwick has the same general concept of the Pelham, but obviously it's combined as opposed to the separate Pelham. It basically has the effect of a snaffle and a curb.
The mullen snaffle is also often used on farm/work/plow horses due to the constant bit pressure many of them deal with.
