    I have several different products. I had a soft Courbette bridle that stated on the tag "do not oil". So that one got a protective coating like Leder Balm or Leather New. A stiff thing like a western saddle I give all the oil it wants the first time, then protective coating. I just play it by feel . If you don't want something softened (like my new Edgewood bridle), I just use protection.
