Breast collar

Okay, so went for our first trail ride today (squee!!!) and found out that our saddle slips enough to need a breast collar. I ride in an Aussie saddle (LOVE IT). I love the look of Aussie breast plates, but would a western breast collar work if I can't get one?

I'm looking at this for an Aussie breast plate (would match my saddle rather well lol): Brown leather horse size Australian breastplate | eBay My concern is that it would be stiff, like my bridle that I got off eBay last week (decent quality, just a bit stiff).

My options for a western breast collar include whatever the two local tack shops have in their used tack section.

I can't spend a ton of money right now, or else I'd get a nicer-quality breast plate and be done with it.

Here's a pic of our saddle:

Just as an interesting aside about my saddle...had to take it to the saddle shop the other day to have them trim up the left stirrup leather so we could add another hole since the leather was stretched out about 1.5" and the stirrup was too long, even on the highest hole. Anyway, was talking to the saddle repair guy and he said that he couldn't find a maker's mark on my saddle, but that it's a nice quality saddle (definitely not a "Made in India" POS). He also said it looks like it originally had a horn, but that someone took it off and patched where the horn was (there's a weird kind of star-shaped "hole" with leather in it where a horn would be). He really liked my saddle, though. He was amazed when I told him I only paid $125 for it. hehe
Do not tell me I can't...because I will show you that I can.

The one that you linked looks to be decent quality. Pretty much any new leather is going to be a bit stiff unless they specifically say that it has been oiled and worked beforehand. That's something that is easy enough to fix.

What I used to do with my English saddles (and my Australian one) was to alternate the stirrup leathers side to side every month or so. That way they stretched evenly.

I'm not arguing with you, I'm just explaining why I'm right.

Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

It's not always what you say but what they hear.

saddle looks too wide, and / or is sitting to far back for that horse,
I much prefer biothane tack. Quite a few good ones online. Wintec english ones will work also.

Joe, it was sitting too far back in that pic. I just tossed it on him to take some pics and then took it off and didn't worry too much about where it was sitting. The saddle fits him perfectly. We got a beautiful sweat pattern that the trainer and the BO checked and they were both very happy with it.

I checked the used western breast collars at the local tack shop and they're no cheaper than buying a brand new Australian breast plate, so I'll just go with the breast plate. Now I'm debating between the eBay one and this one: Down Under Kimberly Australian Breastplate - Just about the same price (the one from might be a few dollars more after shipping).

I have found downunder line to run smaller than we are used to.
A western breast strap doesnt usually have the "H" part that makes it fit so much better for Aussi saddles.
Wintec Breastplate Martingales and Breastcollars Tack English these are nice., these are nicer and what I like,

Beautiful Breast collars - your trim and color choice. Not a lot of $$ either.
