What is the difference between the two? I currently do not ride with either, but at both of the endurance rides I went on everyone else had one of those on their horse. What is the purpose? My saddle has never slipped, but enough people use it that now I am wondering if it would make life better for Gem if she had one. Thanks!
I think of it as a seat-belt for my saddle. You may not need it for years or more, but someday if you have a wreck it can keep your saddle from rolling under your horse. I use one just for that reason.
I have had it keep my saddle (and me) from going under the horse on at least two occasions. Also, it is extra protection to keep your saddle from sliding backwards on steep terrain, such as climbing a mountain trail (which is why I imagine all the endurance riders use them).
I feel naked without one. To me it is an important piece of safety equipment.
Thank you everyone. I think I will look at adding one to my tack for next season. I figured there was a reason all the experienced people used them. Thanks again!
