Buying Saddles Online

What are your thoughts about buying a saddle online? Wondering if it is possible to approximate how good of a fit a saddle will be. Do you know of any good places?

Unless I find a fantastic deal on a quality saddle (a friend of mind bought an Antares for $800 on eBay once) that I know I can re-sell, absolutely not. Or, I guess, if I have the disposable income to potentially have hung up for a while while trying to re-sell a saddle that doesn't fit.

I have no problem with on-line shopping (you can find certain brands only on-line) IF the store (or the seller) has a good trial policy (like Trumbull Mountains - you can try the saddle for a week).

Horsestuff, google horsesaddleshop and look for their templates. They are free to download. Transfer to cardboard. One half will fit the horse. Either that half or the other half will denote saddle size. You should familiarize yourself with acceptable manufacturers as there's a lot of junk that looks pretty but it still junk. If you find one that peaks your interests, post a pic on here and someone will let you know if it's a yah or a nay.

At the barn where I give lessons, they recently purchased a bunch of standard saddles from Horze.com. They come in to basic all around shapes and fit most of our ponies perfectly. The leather one is definitely of superior quality, it looks pretty expensive and is really really comfortable. The Other synthetic one is okay, sturdy, fits in at a show, and is less than $200 which is awesome, especially for what it is.

I got my saddle through SmartPak. They have a test ride program that's great.

I have bought most my saddles online. The tack shops around here are ridiculously overpriced and I have rarely found something for sale privately close enough to drive to get it. I went through a LOT of saddles to find one for my mule, gets pricey sending saddles back and forth and I was stuck having to resell some that I bought privated. I have used horsesaddleshop.com, nice people. I ended up sending that saddle back because it it didn't fit. I bought my last saddle from usedsaddles.com.

If you know exactly what you need, you can get some great deals. For example, I know that I and my horse can use a 17", medium tree Passier or a 17.5" 31 cm Stubben. I can find great deals on either of those with a little patience. If I didn't know exactly what I need, I can still find great deals as long as there's a return policy.

If you're just looking for a saddle, and you don't know what you need, and you don't know what your horse needs, and the seller is flaky, then you might be losing a chuck of your cash.

Cool thanks. Seems like somewhat of a gamble but if there is a good return policy, it may be worth it.

Most charge a restocking fee, plus your usually out two way shipping, ends up costing you a couple hundred bucks to try. I will no longer ever deal with an online saddle shop that charges restock fees. Probably wont deal with online at all any more. Spent to much money on returns
