They're not English, they're made in the Far East or India which is why they're cheap.

That bad? Do they make alright beginner saddles? Just for light riding for something different to do with my horses....

By "beginner" you mean starter package and cheap saddles? No. The fact you are a beginner or do a "light riding" doesn't mean you have to damage your horse's back. If you look for something cheap look for decent synthetic brand used.

I've been looking for anything used, and they just don't exist in my area. The "used" saddles are saddles that people bought in their western size and are trying to sell because they're too small for them.

I've been looking for anything in a 17" in my area, and just keep coming up with these cheapo's and brand new saddles that are like Stubben's and such. If I could find a good saddle in my price range, I'd buy it... but they don't exist here. Or are VERY rare.

What about places like tacktrader or classifieds? I remember several canadians here selling used saddles for very reasonable prices (I assume you are in Canada?).
