Well if you had to buy a saddle today, I would say go with the Wintec that is modeled after the Bates. I forget what it is called, but it is the color of leather instead of black and it rides pretty well. Also, with any of these saddles, you need to get a half back pad. I have a Mattes and it works very well, but they aren't cheap. On the other hand, instead of only buying a saddle with the interchangable gullet system, you can save up and get a nicer saddle. I don't like Bates or Collegiate, but I really recommend a Crosby. My saddle is a Selle Francaise which was made by a company that Crosby bought out, but they don't make them much anymore and they are hard to find, but if you can find them they would be perfect for you. My saddle fit my high withered warmblood/TB perfectly with the Mattes pad even when she built up her muscle. The saddle rides great too.

I like the Wintec. It's a little awkward at first, but once you get used to it, it is really comfy, and the horses seem to like it as well! Wintecs are usually a good deal, too. You can get like a microfiber one or something that you don't have to clean which is really nice!

See if you can get a used saddle.
I just got a used crosby for $200, and I know there are a few members that have saddles for sale. Ranging from $300-$450. Something to look into if you want a good saddle but don't have the money right now.
