So I finally have a western saddle for Aires. I haven't tried it on him yet, but it fits my best friend's built-like-a-tank QH mare, so it should fit Aires.
Anyway, right now I have two saddle pads. I have an older cheap saddle pad that I was given with a synthetic saddle I bought (sold the saddle and the lady didn't want the saddle pad) and I have a fairly nice 1" thick wool pad that I bought at the annual tack swap we have during EquiFest. The wool pad is scalloped around the edges, has black leather wear guards, and is grey with tiny black flecks. I can't find a manufacturer's name anywhere on it. It's not "wow" quality, but it's definitely not a super cheap pad, either.
Anyway, I'm wondering if a thinner, contoured wool pad would be a better choice. Aires is very mutton-withered. For my Aussie saddle, I have a leather saddle pad with a thin wool liner, VERY similar to the third pad down on this site:The saddle pads for horses!
So, for a mutton-withered, broad-backed horse with a 30-35lbs western saddle, what pad would you recommend? I'd like to keep the price at, or under, $100. I was looking at the Diamond Wool Contour Felt Ranch Pad on horse.com for $80.99 (I know I've seen it elsewhere for cheaper), but it says it's 1" thick and that's what we have now, which seems *really* thick.
