Custom made saddles

So, my trainer informed me that my horse has been very difficult to find a saddle that will fit her. This means that the best option for the future (when I get to be the primary one to work with her) is likely a custom built saddle. My question is...have you ever had a custom built saddle, especially for a horse that's difficult to fit? What saddle makers (english & western) do you recommend? Any other information that will be helpful in my search (rather passive at the moment as it will probably be a good 2-3 years before she will be anywhere close to me).
Thank you!

I had a custom built saddle for my pony. I got a Luc Childeric for her and I loved the saddle and so did she, until it got too small for her,
She got a lot more muscles than we thought she would, so I had to sell the saddle, and by a new one...

It's quite expensive and it took at least 8 weeks for the saddle to be made and delivered to me.

But when you finally get the saddle, what an amazing feeling!
I'm going to order a custom saddle as soon as we're back on track again. (She's preggers now...)

I just got a western saddle made by Jason McKenzie. Beautiful, comfy and fits my horse. He is a pleasure to work with on getting the right fit.

The problem with custom saddles is that your horse still keep changing over the years, and selling custom saddle is very hard.

I don't know about western brands, but I know Black Country and County (english brands) do customization of the saddles.

Exactly. So then you have spent $$$$$$$ and have a saddle that is hard to sell (most "custom" ones are, because the are "custom") and it doesn't fit your horse.

Just because it's "custom" doesn't necessarily mean it will fit only one horse! Lol The custom saddle I have will fit 95% of the horses out there (already tried it on 2 Arabs and 1 QH with no fit problems). It does cost some money, but very much worth it in the long run. You just can't beat the quality and craftmanship.

Gigem, it's lesser of the problem with western saddle. However I've seen it to be a problem with english saddles. If none "general" saddle fits the horse something is odd about the shape. And it'll be hard to find a customer with exactly shape. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying those "custom" saddles I've seen were sitting "on sale" for long time.

I think what would contribute to the resale is what exactly is so different about your horse that makes a saddle hard to fit.

I am speaking about western saddles, but all of our saddles are custom built, BUT not to specifically fit a certain horse. Western trees vary greatly between styles, bar angles and even vary between tree makers.

You may be able to find something pretty close to fitting, dependent on your issue, and take it from there. A good saddle maker will help you do this, but not talk you into a completely custom saddle that will only fit one horse and cost you a fortune.

I have a tendency of buying horses with similar builds - just a preference. I've had several custom Western saddles made on a specific tree that works for my horses.

Custom doesn't always mean for a particular horse but a range of horses with tooling or style that you have made to your taste. I've never had a problem selling a custom made saddle and, in fact, that has been the selling point.

I'm curious to see what the fitting issues are that your trainer is having that prompts him/her to say you NEED a custom saddle...
