Question Dang Western Saddles..

I tried measurements and what not, but I still can't tell if my saddle really fits Poco. She's been bucking and carryiong on, so the first thing I thought was that the new saddle has something to do with it, since it's not her hooves.

How far should the horn be above? Should the sides be snug or loose? Forgive me, I don't know the saddle parts. I'm an eventer lol, western saddles are not my thing! The parts nearest to the shoulder, should they be tight once the saddle is cinced, or loose?

Can you just post photos? Might make it easier.
Is there a professional saddle fitter in your area?

Best to get a saddle fitter out & they can explain a proper fit to you & tell you if your current saddle fits. Money well spent, then when you buy another saddle or another horse, you will know the guidelines. Ask at your local tackshop, they can probably steer you in the right direction.

Post pictures and it will be easier to evaluate.

As a whole, western saddle fit isn't THAT drastically different from English. There are fine points, yes, but a poorly fitting saddle should be pretty visible. You can always put the saddle on your horse, lunge her until she sweats and then examine the sweat marks - which should be even without dry spots, as a general guideline.

Is your horse bucking and carrying on in English tack or just the western saddle you suspect isn't fitting correctly?
