Basically anything thin enough to be flexible but still provide some cushioning is good in my books. They need to be flexible to be able to be pulled up into the gullet.

Here is a link to a thinner contoured pad that I know a lot of my trainer friends swear by!

Dura-Tech® Support Contoured Pad with Tekno-Dri in Work/Protective at Schneider Saddlery

Just make sure that whichever saddle pad you choose you make sure to pull up the pad in the middle on top of the wither up to the gullet of the saddle!
