If I had children I definitely would. No one can get on a horse for any amount of time unless they have a helmet on at my barn.

It doesn't matter which horse or pony is being ridden and it doesn't matter if an adult si riding with them and it doesn't matter if someone is leading the horse!
I truly think there should be more attempts made to educate people about helmets, accidents, and what can happen if you fall and hit the rock. I must admit I rode without one too when I was a kid (we couldn't buy any helmets where we lived that time). And now I think how dumb it was of my parents not to at least try to get one.

BTW when western people start laughing about me riding in helmet I always ask them if they'll pay my disability if something happen. That ends the laugh usually.

My kids always wear a helmet. Riding at an English barn helps because EVERYONE wears a helmet, so that's all they see, so riding to them is wearing your breeches, your boots, your half chaps and your helmet....

Barn just got a Western trainer.... no helmet in sight, should be interesting to see if they attract some Western riders and if they will wear them or not.

At our barn everyone wears a helmet. So yes, my children (even if we didn't have that rule) would wear one.

As a child in western classes, I always rode with a helmet. Now that I'm a late teen, when I occasionally show in western, I don't. Its a personal choice. If I feel the horse is a little bit hot or its windy, then I put my helmet on. But at larger level shows, I don't.

I know, no-one should be judged for wearing a helmet, but at larger level shows I have seen children lose for wearing one. And that I think is incredibly unfair.

^ if I was the parent or even relative of one of those children I would march right up to that judge and smack them so hard they're tiny brains rattly inside they're head. That would make me SO mad!

I'm not following the "greedy" part here. The ignorant part (I prefer uneducated) I understand.

BTW - All of my students (I'm a NARHA instructor) wear helmets, and so do I on and off the trail in my western rig. I'm partial to this model.

YES! I never get on without a helmet either. My husband always wears his. All of my students have to wear one, kids, teens, and adults.

I knew a girl in high school who died because of a head injury from a freak horse accident. With a helmet, she would have been hurt, but she'd be alive and would have recovered... She was a great rider too, an eventer and show jumper to 4'6". She had a very promising riding career and was a great student.

I have that helmet. It's very comfy and cool for summer riding.
