Well, even though this thread is a few months old- yes I wear a helmet! Honestly, theres so many styles and designs to choose from, why WOULDN'T you?
I have never actually hit my head from a fall, but being thrown off my greenie and seeing his hooves flying 3 inches away from my face is reason enough.
I don't understand how people can say 'it's my head, and I don't care'. ACTUALLY, if you get a head injury, and can not care for your horse (or work to pay for him) in a way your hurting him too.
Just my two cents, but to each his own.

I wear one, and I wouldn't get on a horse without one. Besides which our yard has a rule that if you are on the yard you MUST wear a riding hat, as soon as you get out the gate you can take it off lol

I wear one because I like the way they look it goes with the out fit lol and I just like to protect my head :) also I think my insurance is void if I fall off and don't have a riding hat on? I'll have to check that I guess lol

I've never worn a helmet, well that's a lie I did once when I went riding with my cousin but she insists on everyone wearing one before they ride her horses which isn't a bad thing at all but personally I don't. I wear a cowboy hat sometimes at shows but that's about the only thing I wear on my head but I do make kids who ride or an inexperienced adult wear them kind of a hypocrite I guess, although I should wear one because I ride down a paved rode a lot.

I don't think post like this come up because people want to tell you what to do or they have an unhealthy interest in what other adults do...

I asked this same question a long while back and I asked it out of general interest, I have no interest in telling someone to wear a riding hat, that is up to them! But up till a point I hadn't met anyone who didn't wear one, then suddenly I met lots of people all at one time that argued with me about made me interested to know what peoples opinions were. :)

The thing to remember here is not whether or not it's your choice. Yes, it's your head, it's your life, it's your safety. However, think about what would happen if you *did* have an accident and you were badly injured because you weren't wearing a helmet.

Who would take care of you? Who would have to take a leave of absence from work just to sit at your bedside, change your bandages, feed you, bathe you, help you to the restroom, dress you... ? Hospitals will only do that for a limited time and it's expensive as hell. Insurance will only pay for so much.

Can you afford multi-$10K+ hospital bills? Can your family?

And if your injury was permanent and disabling, who would care for you like a baby for the rest of their/your life?

It's not about *your* choice, it's thinking about those who would have their whole lives turned upside down because you decided not to wear a helmet.

It's always your choice but that doesn't mean it's not a selfish one.
