Dog Clippers for Horses?!

I am part of a group on FB and everybody on it seems to use dog clippers.
I got a wahl set that's suitable for all hair types for a fraction of the cost of a horse clipper.

It would have looked better on a more solid coloured horse but here are the results.

Also depending on the ones you get they may not have as powerful of a motor and be designed for such heavy jobs. I'm a dog groomer so I use my clippers all day almost..My clippers cost me about $200 to have a set that can handle my work load. My clippers can easily clip horses and I can buy the wider blades for them too, but not all "dog clippers" are created equally.

My dog grooming clippers are the same as small horse clippers.

Wahls are typically not enough. They can handle the odd hard job, but you will kill them if you do it frequently. They can't handle heavy, dirty hair on animals.

A good andis or oster are worth their weight in gold when you are clipping dogs, cats, and light work on horses. Once you start going to more than trace/Irish clips or the odd body clip on horses it is nice to upgrade to real body clippers for horses.

OK... I have to ask..

I see the clip job...
I also see "something" you were doing under the saddle area where you striped the coat....

What was your intention?

I'm curious as I have an idea of what you were trying but am not positive so am asking.

What and why did you do this? :-?

So I do have to say not all clippers are made the same.
Some dog clippers are also the same base for a horse clipper and many are not.
They may "look" the same because the housing is the same, but the guts can be very different.
Doing a occasional clipping like you did is one thing....
To do this often may not be in your best interest if the machine is not geared or powered for horses and large animals...it could cut short the life expectancy of the machine and void your warranty.
Just be careful to service the machine professionally or you do it with much attention to detail to give those clippers some longevity and usefulness.

I've used low wattage small animal clippers in the past to do a trace clip and it took absolutely ages. Nowadays I wouldn't bother - at least 90W with decent blades works far better. Yes, they're expensive, but if you look after them they last a long time - I'd had my last set that eventually conked out (Liveryman) for more than 20 years. And I'd bought them secondhand! :)

See for me that is to much skin showing.....a little to close a shave.
Except your horses are dark skinned and less chance of sunburn, that close a clip I would fear burning down here. Yes, even in winter.
And no protection from the cold at night....a day or night like tonight they need warm blankets and hay to eat.
They look shiny and clean....

So what color is the darker one when the coat is not clipped?
Smoky black?

Its really not that close. I've seen much closer in some of the barns I've worked at. That's also with the blade cutting the hair as short as it will go. I could easily have left a guard on and did a 1/4 in cut.

I'm in Florida. It was 85 degrees out. Either I clip my wooly mammoths or deal with fungal or overheating from the amount they sweat.

Kenzie rocking a Blanket clip with a 1/4 guard used on the clipped areas. The blanket is her usual coat. She's a black, though sunfaded.

I totally understand the crazy of the weather and what to do about their coats when it gets warmer.
I'm in Central Florida....
85 two days ago and today not above 60 with a 20 mph sharp north wind...
My horses were miserable all day with the rawness....
They are sporting their t/o sheets tonight and finally the ears stopped being pinned and sour pusses on them...
Out all day on pasture to wander and munch on, tonight they have their hay nets to keep them busy if they want..

Kenzie is pretty....bet she is a jet black if that is sun-faded...
