Dying Breeches?

Got a pair of light grey breeches with leather knee patches. I touched them and they were instantly dirty. I don't show, and got these at a tack swap for 10$ and been riding all summer without using them, so their loss with some horrible dying incident won't be trouble to me.

Curious about dying these, possibly a burgundy. Anyone have experience with this? What dyes work best, does the leather dye? They have gone to the wash already but, I am sure they have a cotton blend of some sort.
