Dying Western Saddles

If I want to dye a saddle black (and the leather is proper leather...not that cheap Asian junk), does the saddle have to have a flat, natural finish or can I do it with any kind? (will it work with saddles that are shiny?)

Thanks.

If the Saddle has the shiny stuff on it, you cannot dye a saddle, some shiny stuff can be washed of with only warm water as it is water soluble, they other kind cannot be removed very easily.

I have seen a few attempts at dyeing a Saddle and I would not recommend it, take it to a Saddle repair shop or a Cobbler shoe repair place for an opinion, especially because of the shiny stuff.

Thanks. Good to know. I've found a couple of really nice older saddles, but they're the wrong color for what I need it for. I probably wouldn't do it myself, but I don't want to buy one of those shiny ones if it's too hard to dye at all.
