Easy-Change Gullet Systems

I've been looking at a Wintec saddle with the easy-change gullet system and when I mentioned it to an experienced friend of mine she told me that she's heard some negative things about it, though she couldn't remember what. I've never seen or heard anything bad about it but maybe I didn't look very hard..
At any rate, I'm wondering if there's anything like that that I should know about before buying? I can't imagine how it would have problems but maybe it does..

Thank you all very much

That system is HORRID. It is VERY difficult to change to a different size and takes a few people to do it. Also the screws that you need to remove and put back on are very small which makes the whole thing even more difficult to change. I had a saddle that had the system and I recall changing the gullet only once or twice in the 4 years I owned it because of how hard it was to actually change.

I don't regret having owned the saddle as I used it a lot for breaking a few horses. It was fairly comfortable as well and very easy to keep clean-but I wouldn't own another one :)

I've heard that changing the gullets is a huge pain and most people don't ride so diverse a range of horses that you need to.

Also I have a friend who is a saddle fit specialist at a tack shop and she said that the changable gullets are actually horrible for jumping saddles. Dressage is not so bad, but she said to never recommend one to someone who jumps. I wish I remember why.... :) Something to do with they way they hit the withers.

Thank you both a whole lot! As for the inconvenience of switching it sounds like it still might be okay for me I think..The saddle would mainly be for my one horse, I was thinking it would just be kind of cool to be able to change it for any situation that might come up and maybe putting it on our other horse every now and then just for fun (just to mix it up but he's very western haha) and they are very different sizes

But that may be a problem with the jumping issue..Do you think it would be a problem with any jumping, like even small jumps every now and then for fun?

I think they are great. I can change mine by myself without any trouble, even when going from the widest (white) gullet to the narrowest (yellow) I have no worries. Ima dressage rider but used to jump and never had any issues and it especially didnt harm my horses back. And my friend jumps regularly in the same style saddle as mine with no worries. In fact at state champs recently I saw a lot of people competing in various styles of wintecs (they are really popular in Australia).

So I think that for what you want it should be fine.

I would personally recommend these saddles to anyone. I own one, and have never had a problem with it. The gullet is VERY easy to change....I'm not sure how it takes 3-4 people? But it fit my horse very well!

Gullet

My trainer is pretty negative about the Wintec saddles, because they are cheap, don't last very long, and they squeak alot. Also, you can change the gullet size of the saddle, but you cannot change the way the saddle fits the horse. I know that there's some other, nicer brands of saddles out there, though, that also have the easy gullet change, but I don't know what to say about those...

They arnt cheap over here, Id say mid priced, to expensive for the better quality ones! Mine have lasted about 4 yrs and are still in excellent condition, both were second hand when I bought them.
