English Saddle on Ebay...

I hope by posting this, someone else doesn't buy it if it will work for Chili... But I need an opinion. I have a feeling it's probably "made in China/Pakistan/etc" but for the price with all that it comes with, would it be something that would be worth to test out English to see if I like it enough to buy something more expensive down the road and if so, how long "down the road" do you think I'd have with this particular saddle???

It's crap, will hurt your horse, and will probably fall apart within 6-12 months.

If you're really interested in trying any of the English disciplines, buy a good used saddle. If you find out later that you'd really rather ride Western, you can resell the saddle and probably get as much for it as you paid.

Instead of buying some cheapo package off e-bay, look in the consignment areas of local or online tack shops. You can find some really good bargains that way.

Might be worth a try for the price, but I would not expect it to hold up well for sure. She has MANY of them for sale.....all different sizes, etc, and I didn't see any negative feedback related to them.

I didn't see any negative feed back either. I mean, I don't expect it to hold up forever, but I would expect it to hold up to casual usage for at least a year or two... maybe longer? Or is that expecting too much?

Hell, the western saddle I have now (on borrow, as stated) has a few issues with it and it's not well made but it isn't going to fall apart in my hands!

Speed Racer: Advice noted. I really don't care if it's a used saddle as long as it will FIT my horse. If you have any links worth looking into, that would be appreciated!

I looked at all the neutral and negative feedback and was NOT impressed with the attitude of the seller. Steering clear.

SR is right, it's junk. And I agree with tiny too - it's horribly wide on front and just look plain weird on bottom.

It looks really wide to me which would be a concern just in that you'll be playing around with half-pads, bumpers, and lollipops to try to get the saddle to fit. As for it holding up, you'd be surprised. My first saddle was an argentine made all purpose that I bought for the entire package (girth and stirrups with leathers) for $125. It lasted about 20 years.

Actually Argentinian saddles are not bad at all IMHO. Bunch of pricey brands are made there as well. I tried one my neighbor has, which is 20-25 years old, and its still usable and I'd say not all that bad (besides the size, my butt and legs don't fit into 16 seat well enough). However I HIGHLY doubt this particular saddle is made in Argentina!

1) My mare requires a really wide saddle;

2) I value the opinion of others in regards to English saddles and altho I've heard repeatedly to stay away from the cheapies, thought maybe it might be good for a little while -expecting it NOT to hold up;

3) I do not want to hurt Chili in any way obviously and if the thought is that this saddle would hurt her, I am NOT going to even look at it;

4) again, she needs a wide saddle....
