Always behind - I think so, although I don't think it has that slit on the bottom, just up by the pommel.

I will look this afternoon when I go outside with my daughter. It's still a little cool out right now to take her out.

Here is a pic.
See the strap around the billet? I just stuck the billet through the loop at the end of it.
Just make sure that you thread it over a billet you will be attaching your girth to. Otherwise it would be quite useless! Good luck!
