English/ Western saddle sizes?

I have always ridden western, but lately have found that my reining horse likes to jump also! So I've been looking on local craigslist for a cheap used saddle...But I have one question. If I ride a 20 inch western saddle, do I also look for a 20 in english saddle? It sounds silly, but I was unsure on whether or not they both fit the rider the same. Any help would be appreciated.

If that is true you would need a 22" English

A 20" western is extremely rare is why I ask, a 22" English would be ever more rare.

Not really an English expert, but I rarely see anything larger than a 19" seat.


Cut back saddles are measured different and can be 20", but they are foe special purposes, not your normal riding.


Normally an English seat is 2" more than the the Western Seat size

How did you measure your saddle? 20 inch is REALLY big.

Forgive the personal question, but what is your height and weight, and do you have long legs porportionately ? This can help determine saddle size.
I almost never hear of an English saddle bigger than 19 inch, but there may be some 20 inch. I ride in an 18 inch english. And I am a bit of a chunk, though I am not tall.

Never heard of a 20 inch western. If that is accurate, there is Nothing common english about that size.

Oh my gosh...dont I feel dumb. I had been misinformed on how to measure. Im an 18 in western. And I am 6'1 about 200 lbs...

6'1 and 200 lbs I'd say not on a "heavy" side. Personally I wonder if you should of go with smaller Western side. "General" rule is English size = Western size + 2, however for English saddle size it also depends on the length of the leg. For example, I rode in 15 Western, however both of my English saddles are 18 (I have long legs). My guess would be 18, may be 19 should be OK size for you (although it's a guess of course :) ).

I'm betting that you ride a 16" Western saddle. Don't know anybody who makes larger than that. Most adults ride a 15" Western. If you ride 16" Western, you probably want an 18" English. Most HuntSeat/Hunter/Jumper/English Pleasure riders ride 17" to 17.5" English--I ride 17.5" English. I also ride an 11 1/2" McClellan, JUST to confuse you even more. =D
