Ever bought a saddle online? I have a few questions.

Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum and just getting into riding myself. I'm curious to see if anyone has had experience purchasing a new saddle online?

What was your experience? Would you do it again? What should I watch out for, etc. Overall I'm a little skeptical about buying a new saddle online but I had a friend tell me it wasn't a big deal. Any comments or info would be extremely helpful.

I've bought both new and used saddles online. As long as you know what seat size you take, tree size your horse takes, and know quality from garbage, you should be fine.

I've purchased three saddles online, had good experiences with all.

Saddle 1 was an all purpose, black leather English saddle. No brand, was one of those saddle sets.

Saddle 2 was a brown leather jumping saddle. "Stunni" brand - a cheapie made-in-India treeless.

Saddle 3 was a black leather/synthetic Ghost Dressage saddle.

Had great experiences with all three purchases. The first two buys were from eBay, the third was from a distributor.

The first two I wasn't terribly worried about because I purchased under eBay and had a 10 day return period. The third I was worried about because it cost significantly more money but I had a 10 day trial period on it as well.

My suggestion is to be sure there's some kind of trial period. Try to get a demo or see if you can ride in someone else's saddle that's the same make/model. It's more challenging with the treed saddles because of the problems with fit (my last two saddle purchases were treeless). Try to stick with known brands. I was very lucky with my two no name purchases, but know MANY MANY stories of people who had terrible fortune with both named and no name saddles.

Thanks speed racer. Would you mind telling me where you bought your saddles from?

I have bought two synthetic saddles online, but I think they would be a little easier buying online than a leather one if you haven't ever seen that particular saddle in person.

The first saddle I bought online was new, and I got it from Schneider's Saddlery.

The second and third saddles I bought online were used, and came from Craigslist ads.

I have not, now that I think of it. But like speedracer said know all yours and your horses info before buying. Also watch out for things like this:

That is a VERY cheap and poor made saddle. Go for quality leather saddle and if you cant afford it look in to synthetic saddles (good brands of coarse)

This is a nice saddle V

This is a nice synthetic saddle >

Vs this one:

you can tell what one is better made and what one looks like plastic/ cardboard

do your homework, read reviews, and closely check the return policy. Also be advised return shipping gonna run you about $50. So thats kinda the gamble you are taking. But reality is you will probably save much more than that. I bought a circle y online using pictures and wither tracings of my horse and it fit my horse perfectly, and fit me not at all, ate about $60 in that deal. Decided no more online sight unseen purchases. Richmond VA had a horse expo so was able to sit in and try different saddles and found one I liked, then ordered it to fit my horse. So hopefully it will all work out. BUT I still checked and agreed to the return policy before ordering.

I have bought online before as well.
The company I bought my new saddle from is known for their excellent customer service, so once I narrowed down what I wanted/would work for my horse and all the fitting info I needed, I called them.
I had a huge list of questions about the three different saddles I had in mind as well as the options on each saddle.
The person I spoke to knew his stuff very well and we were able to collectively decide which would be the best fit for both my horse and me.
I couldn't be happier with my purchase, but.... I made sure I understodd what both my horse needed and I needed.
This included going to some local places to sit in some saddles to get a feel for sizing, tree, twist, and comfort.

I bought 2 of the three saddles I have owned online. My last one I bought through SmartPak, hands down the best customer service available. They have a test ride program for most of their saddles which makes it very easy to try a saddle before you buy it.
