Question Favorite girth?

What is your favorite girth material?
Fleece? Nyloprene? Mohair? Neoprene? other?
And why?

Horses are scared of two things... Things that move and things that don't.

Different horses = different girths. Three of mine have hospital felt and one has a mohair. I cannot use any type of string on one of my mares. She will develop girth galls after a very short time.

Mohair string cinches, not too narrow, lots of strands. 100% wool or mohair for the 'give' because western do not have elastic like english girths do. I avoid nylon or blends. I hear Alpaca wool is great.

I avoid neoprene or non-slip material because the cinch does need to move during tightening and I feel it would pull or pinch or tear a few hairs out during the process. Plus I had a mare that let me know that.

I do have one that is nylon webbing backed with wool felt, another backed with sheepskin. I like those for winter because the backing goes up past the ring so the cold metal doesn't touch the horse.

I only buy Professionals Choice girths, because I like the quality. Not too spendy, but not cheap garbage.

JJ has a wool fleece girth, because he's very thin skinned and neoprene gives him sores. I do use neoprene on Casper though, because it doesn't seem to bother him.

I like neoprene. They fit my horses well and they don't pinch. So far I have not experience any galling on my horses. They are very easy to clean. Currently, I'm trying the Weaver Airflow cinch with double rollers.

Mohair string roper cinches for me. That's what I use on 95% of my horses. I do have one that is merino wool for those horses that need something different though.

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog: http://robertsontraining.blogspot.com/

I have Pro Choice on all my saddles. It's neoprene.

My saddle came with its mohair cinch brand new and it works great. I like using leather for english because it has enough grip without rubbing my horse.

I use SmartPak's synthetic dressage girth (PVC waffle weave), but if money were no object I'd definitely get one of the nice leather ones with sheepskin.
