    Fitting a western saddle. Suggestions?

It's that time where I need to start looking into getting a western saddle to start my little one in. The problem is I don't know how to fit a western saddle. I'm not looking for something amazing because I'll only be using this saddle to break her out and it likely won't fit her for more than a year or two. She is 2.5 right now, I plan on starting her in the spring/summer.

I just want something comfortable for her, and bearable for me. She is round, with a very short back. I'd prefer something on the lighter side, that can give me the most seat without having a saddle that is sitting on her hips.

Also, I ride in an English 17.5", what size will I want to hover around in a western saddle? Thanks in advance!

I think you would want a 15.5 inch western saddle, or 16.
For a short backed horse look for one with a round skirt. Barrel saddles have the most "seat" to hold you in, but I hate the very upright fork (pommel) and back, but that's me.
Abetta makes some nice lightweight and inexpensive saddles with round skirts.

    I recommend spending $20 here:

Thanks, both of you! I have that book for the English saddle, it's like the horse owner's bible, lol.

Rounded skirt makes sense. I want to find a western saddle that has as little saddle as possible, lol. I'd probably go Aussie if I had ever ridden in one. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable in one. I hate feeling held in.
