Fly Mask?

I recently posted a thread about my horse's eye swelling up. Well, I have found out what caused it...it was one of her two fly masks rubbing either dirt from the fly mask into her eye, or just rubbing against her eye and making it itchy.
One is a few months old, but the other is only a few weeks old.
Usually I would just stop putting a fly mask on her but she has a huge white strip down her face that is constantly getting burnt and while sunscreen works, it gets used up very quickly ( that's what I have been using while her eye was getting better, instead of the fly mask)
And recently my friends horse died from cancer because it too had a white face but she didn't protect it. So I don't have the option of leaving it off.. ( also don't worry I don't have it on TOO much, just enough to protect her face)

I was wondering what the best thing to do from her was.:
A. Throw out the oldest one, and buy a bigger size ( so maybe it will stop rubbing)
B. Send the newer one in for a wash with my rug

Thank you

Make sure, if you are going to use a fly mask on your horse, that you use the correct size for your horse. Regular maintenance will keep it clean and comfortable for the horse to wear. I brush the dirt off of my horse's fly masks everyday after turnout. If they are too dirty to just brush off with a stiff bristle brush, then I will hose them off and hang them out to dry. I wash them in the laundry with mild laundry detergent about once a week as well.

I really like Cashel Crusader fly masks. They have a very wide range of styles and sizes to choose from as well. If you are having trouble finding the correct size for your horse they may have more choice in sizes for you to choose from than other brands. They also have a style with a long nose that will cover up your horse's pink skin.

I clean the mask every day (not wash, but kinda "scrape" the dirt out of those little cells, although I do wash too from time to time). I really like masks by Cashel too BTW.

Thank you both.
I didn't know that at all, she must of been so uncomfortable!
I will definitely clean the fly mask from now on.

Dover, Smartpak, stateline, I think horse.com might carry them too. And yeah they deliver though shipping is a bit extra.

Yes, I thought shipping would be extra but it will be worth it so my horse is comfortable, thanks
