Fly Masks

I was just wondering if you guys have every had a horse chase another horse that was wearing a fly mask.

My horse's have had fly masks at the barn where I boarded, but I had tried some on them, so they were used to them. But since they moved home the flies have been really bad on their faces (I blame the cows next door).

Anyway, I put one on my QH gelding, Beau, he was fine. Then I went and put one on my TB mare, Daisy. I compared fit and decided Beau needs the next size up so I took his off so it stayed clean so I could exchange it.

I'm in the barn and hear the horses start running around... didn't think much of it. But, then there was really loud squealing going on so I looked out the door. Beau was chasing Daisy and her foal all around the field. It took me about 10 minuted to stop them, catch the gelding and put him in a stall. I took off Daisy's fly mask, turned Beau back out and all was fine.

It was the flymask. And I don't know why he doesn't like other horses with them on...

Well... My qh chased my paint when I put blanket on. But it was like couple mins or so and when I yell at her she stopped. As for fly masks it's first time I hear about it. Is it a usual one or something weird (like those with eyes on them and such)?

BTW, just wondering what county you board in? You may be pretty close to us. :)

It's a plain supermask II, like this:
SuperMask II Farnam (Equine - Horse Tack Supplies - Blankets Sheets - Fly Sheets)
No ears, long nose, nothing. And he went over and sniffed her before the chase broke out, so it's not like he didn't know it was her.

I used to board at Windsor Stables (the old Andover Equestrian Center) in Linthicum. Now, my horses are at our house in Millersville.

By the way, in the first post it should say "my horse's have never had fly masks at the barn where I boarded...". I hate how you can't edit after 10 minutes! But yea, they didn't need them up there, flies weren't that bad.

Maybe he's jealous. He wants a fly mask too.

Actually it very well may be. If I put fly mask or blanket on one I MUST put on other one too, because she becomes all antsy if I delay doing it.

You can also slide the fly mask all over her body so it would get her smell - that may help too.

Well I'm going to exchange his for a bigger one in a few mintutes. I'll be able to put his on, I can try Daisy's again to see what happens.

I will rub it on her beforehand... hope it helps!

I agree, but it's a problem.
He wouldn't let them stop and whenever he got close enough he would try to bite them, even the foal. They're faster than him, so he didn't get close that much, but when he did - it was bad. < I should've put that in the first post, sorry.

And Daisy tries to kick him whenever she can.

I can't have my horses or foal getting hurt because of a stupid fly mask.

agreed, that is wild it bothers him so much... maybe take him out, put the mask on her then just hold him to let him see that its okay and gradually get him used to it.
