I have 3 horses. Two wear them. Ty, my 11 yr old gelding is allergic to bugs, so its a big help for him. My 4 yr old Thor wears one cause hes all pink skinned, so it helps with the sun a little of i actually put them out during the day. Usually they go out at night. Finn, my yearling seems to have no problems as long as i keep fly spray on him.

Not a lot of people around the barns I've been to use them. The only times they are used are forwent he horse has sensitive skin. I think the idea for getting rid of flies is stupid. I don't wear a fly sheet in the summer because of bugs, so why should my horse have one. If you are afraid of flies, use super fly spray.

I use them and LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I've used every kind of fly spray I can find and also the BioSpot kind of treatment that is supposed to last a month or two. Nothing keeps my girl looking comfortable except her fly sheet. I still spray her legs, but thats it. So with the threat of West Nile so bad in my area, if I can add a layer of protection and help keep her comfy, then why not??

It also helps keep her cool. I was really concerned at first that she would be too hot in it. The first week she had it I would check on her a few times a day to make sure she wasnt sweating too bad under it. No matter what time of day, even on the 100 degree days, she was cool and dry under the sheet.

Sooo, less bother from flys, cooler in the heat, less sun bleaching. I certainly dont see any cons from using them.

I use them when the B52 bomber flies get reallybad and the horses seem to be constantly bucking and running from them. Fly spray does not work for them. Plus I don't want to overload the chemicals day after day. Seems like the hottest summer months are when I may bring them out. I don't when the flies aren't bad. I put them on for the hottest part of the day, otherwise they are off. I like the lightweight ones that do their purpose without draping all over them.

I think it all comes down to what works best for each individual horse.

Most horses don't need to wear a fly sheet. Sometimes their owners use them anyway if they prefer to try and keep their horses coat clean and protect their coat from sun bleaching, not have to use fly spray and things like that.

Some horses are allergic to fly bites and/or fly sprays, so a fly sheet would be a very good idea for these horses to help protect them from the flies, especially if fly spray isn't an option because of allergies to it.

I have used fly sheets on my horses in the past. I honestly think they are happier without them, I just have to make sure to apply fly spray before they are turned out. Their coats aren't as nice, but I think they prefer not having to wear the sheets.

I agree that all horses don't need to have fly sheets. I think it a lot of times is more of a human comfort just like blankets. Some horses seem to hate them. I only use them, after pulling them out after not using them for two years, during the hottest time of day when the huge biting flies are out. My percheron who has a very long back can't reach her butt right where they land. She actually seems relieved when I put hers on to prevent that. But she is not the norm I am sure.
