Hackamore control

I usually ride my horse in a tom thumb bit but she was fighting with it today, which she never does. My instructor looked at her mouth and said she had a bump on her gum that looked raw. So she switched me to a hackamore. She didn't fight it but I had much less control of her. I think this helped to contribute to my fall today. What can I do to gain more control. I almost ran over a three year old at the canter because I couldn't get her to stop or turn. Help before someone gets hurt.

Hmm, How is your horse trained? You need to back up to a simple bit or maybe a sidepull and retrain your horse to listen and heed your cues. You should be sure you have absolute control at slower speeds before cantering..

Perhaps the TT isn't the best bit for this horse, or is the injury bit related? I am assuming it is.. if not, then once healed it should be ok.

What is your instructors take on the hack/bit subject?

Hackamore doesn't work for every horse. Besides, the horse should be trained for hackamore, otherwise it gets really confused (I did try hackamore on different horses while working at the farm and some horses were OK with it right away, but some were very-very confused).
