Haflinger Saddle

HI! Looking for some advice on a good Haflinger saddle and the best way to measure for the saddle size. Are Aussie saddles good for Haflingers - I have heard contricting information on that. I do not want to purchase a saddle that will give my wallet a heart attack . So looking for something that is reasonable. Thanks!

It really depends on the Haflinger, I had a bunch for a while, and none of them fit the same saddle

One of them didn't fit any thing designed for a Haflinger, in fact my Big Horn Haflinger saddle fit my Arab better than anything else, where as the arab tree saddle fit the Haflinger Stallion

I never tried an Aussie, you need to start with what sort of riding you want to do, then find a saddle that works for both of you.

Aussies tend to run a bit narrow so depending on how your horse is built it may not be a good choice.

He is quite muscular and wide . This is actually for my daughter and she is looking at him for Western pleasure and possibly some games in 4H shows. Honestly, he is just the best horse and right now, I am using an extra pad on my western saddle to take up the gaps.

The haflinger at our barn is very stocky. The owner has had a hard time finding blankets that fit on his shoulders well, so naturally saddles would also give her trouble. She has found that Crates saddles with FQHB, particularly reining or barrel saddles, which are designed for lots of shoulder movement. He has now worn 5 different Crates saddles, but they were all FQHB and equifit tree.

You can also look into Treeless (good for round and mutton withered horses but different brands are good for other body types as well). You can usually find them for a decent used price on eBay or Tacktrader. I have used my Sensation for 4-H level shows and did just fine. The brand I just mentioned is really good for broad-backed horses (I use it on an Icelandic, and it sounds like some Haffies are similar) However, it does depend on specific body type as well as brand. Make sure, whatever brand you end up choosing, that it is a quality made saddle to ensure comfort for both the horse and your daughter.
