Question half pads...

I put a normal saddle pad on Coco when I ride her, and it feels ok, but yesterday at my lesson I sadly bumped off a girl who was riding Coco (she was training for upcoming competitions) so I could have my lesson. Told my trainer I didn't mind waiting a little, but anywho, not goign to go into barn drama and details.

On Coco was a half pad (I think it was a fleece one) and a saddle pad. It was sooooo much more comfortable! At first I wasn't sure if I was riding in the same saddle, but it was indeed, the same old schooling saddle.

Because of that I am considering of buying a half pad in the future (if I have extra cash and I find one on super sale).
Thing is, there are many different kinds, and I wouldn't be sure what to look for.

So any tips?

Thank you! :)

Half pads are pretty amazing! They can come in normal w/ sheepkin and/or they have shims(memory foam inserts that adust saddle fit)They can be plain memory foam, gel or even cotton. To me Sheepskin is the best, it helps to even out the pressure of the saddle, and can correct saddle fit. Shims are best for helping saddle fit as you can adjust for each part of the saddle that puts pressure on the horse.

To me the best brands are Mattes, Thinline, and Fleeceworks. I'm sure there are other amazing brands out there as well

Thanks. That clarifies things. :) Do they come in many different sizes or is there a standard size, and then a smaller size for ponies and a bigger size for very big horses? HOw does that work?

Would a thick fleece saddle pad do the same? Or almost? I just want something that would help make the saddle fit better and make it more comfy for me.

I think the sizing works like this
Small: 15-16.5
Medium:16.5-18
Large:18-19.5

Or something like that
And they do have pony sizings! Theyre probably for saddles less than 15 inches, probably to fit the pony saddles

They probably all don't follow those guildlines so you'd have to ask the seller

About the fleece pad, it probably would work, it would still cushion the saddle more, but idk a fleece pads never really did it for me like my half pad and all the fleece pads I've used weren't as soft either. I think there's something about the sheepskin that makes the difference altough I don't know what or why since sheepskin is just fleece on leather

I'm just scared I'll get a half pad that won't make the saddle fit better, but make it worse. I am not sure but I think the saddle is a little too wide for Coco. It fits really well on my barns little arab, but coco is a TB and although she isn't as "withery" as some, she still is more narrow.

do you know what kind the other person was using on her?

Personally I love my mattes. It has got a hefty price tag (I was sure that the decimal point was wrong at first..) but it looks great and makes the saddle feel so much more secure. If you are willing to fork out the cash that's what I would recommend. I have the generic fleece one with straps that works just fine.

I know the company was Ogilvy equestrian, and it seems to have been made with a fleecy material stuffed with something fluffy... I'll browse the Internet to see if I can't find a picture of it.
