HDR - advice

So... I'm going to sell my HDR. Last month, at the show in Lexington, it fit Ri. I posted pix in the critique section and you all said it was too big for me so I started thinking maybe I would trade it in on something.

Well... Last weekend... at state fair... It didn't fit Ri!!! (I only ride western at home). My 48" girth was barely fitting him last month, actually about a month and a half ago so I bought a 50" girth which BARELY FIT! So... I got my HDR on him, and it was too narrow on the withers! And the back of it, with the pad did not sit on his back! It was in the air! He let me ride in it, he was a little choppy, didn't want to extend, I'm thinking he couldn't because of the way it sat on his shoulders. SO....

Now I get to get a new saddle! I want a bates. The question I have is... if I sell my HDR, can I get 500 for it? It's a 17 inch and it's about 2 years old, maybe not even that old. I'll post a pic. I think they go for almost $900 new. OR would I just be better off trading it in towards a new Bates (I like the bates because of the interchangeable gullets - and since Ri is only just now 3 this year, he'll grow for a long time to come)... I'm thinking trade-in value is probably what...$300?

These aren't great pix but you can kind of see the saddle.

Can you go to a tack store, with your HDR and ask them what the trade value would be?
I would do some research online of what they are going for used (in a similar condition of course) That way when you go to the tack store, you'll know if they are really low balling you or giving you a fair offer.

I think I'm going to go to the tack store this weekend, but yeah... that's a good idea, I'll check ebay.

*swoon* where did you get your irons from? I've been looking for flex irons for a decent price for a while now...

You will get WAAAAAAAAAAAY more than 300. I just sold my Crosby because I wanted a Beval. A little back story on my Crosby: I was an original, before being sold to Millers that went under and now its Weatherbeater but the Crosby name is pretty much shot. So it had orginal french leather, made in Englad, clean and well cared for, yada yada. I took it in for trade and they offered me 300 bucks. The woman told me it would have sold on Ebay for 595.00. Which I had already tried unsuccessfully. So I sold it to a trainer friend of the store owner for 425 and put that money toward my Baval.

Anyway, if my trade in value on a 16.5 inch, plain flap, 12 year old Crosby was 300... your 2 year old, 17in, HDR with knee rolls will fetch much more than that, I promise you. So my advice would be, before trading it in, consider consignment. I couldn't do consignment because it was all I had. I had to sell it before I could get a new one. If you are in the same boat, use Ebay or Craigslist. I sold a crappy Regent on Craigslist super fast because it was cheap.

If you need any further help on how to sell, let me know. I have a personal interest in saddlery and have sold two saddles this summer! Its a real pain trying to unload tack you want, trust me! I know!

Good Luck!!!

Oh, and I just bought a like-new (used >20 times) HDR Advantage CC for $470 CAD shipped, as the seller needed money quick. She had it listed for $500 USD (shipping n/i) and could have asked for more if she didn't need it moved quickly.

I think I might have to try ebay then. You guys are great. JDI - the irons... my trainer owns a tack shop and she ordered them. I think she buys from Schneiders and textan... not sure who all of her suppliers are. I will ask her.... They were not bad in price... I want to say around $40ish with my discount...

Oh, and just for the record.. I think the flap is too big for you, not the seat size necessarily - not trying to be a bag, but I would hate for you to go buy a new saddle and it not work either.

I was going to say that - it's the flap that's too big, definitely not the seat. Personally, I would actually go up a half size in the seat. I like more room to move though, so I suppose that could just be my own preference. Generally, I think the "rule" is that you should be able to have one hand-width fit on the cantle behind your butt.

I ordered that one. This next one, I am going to get fitted for at the tack shop. That's a regular flap though.... what exactly are you saying? I'm short????
