HDR, wintec, or thorowgood?

I'm looking into getting a new saddle, and I was wondering what your thoughts are on Henri De Rivel, wintec, and thorowgood saddles? Right now I have an HDR synthetic that I love to death, but sadly my horse has grown out of it. I'm not a big fan of leather because I don't do much showing and I love how easy it is to care for a synthetic saddle, and the fact that I can run around and splash in puddles and ride in any weather, but I hear that leather saddles are better for your horses backs. Right now I am considering the HDR advantage eurocup, the wintec close contact, and the thorowgood technic. The wintec and thorowgood are cheaper and synthetic, so I am leaning towards them but I still keep hearing negative comments about synthetic. My horse has a low wither and wide back. Any opinions would be very helpful!

I'm always a fan of the wintecs, because they give you options when it comes to tree size (doesn't mean they fit EVERY back, but if your horse gets wider/thinner with work you're not just stuck with a saddle that fits neither!).

I like them so much that my 'show saddle' is a bates, the leather version. :)

I use my wintec every day, beat the HELL out of it, and it looks brand new. The all purpose puts inadequate riders in a chair seat however, so it's certainly not the best balanced thing I've ever sat in! It's just a very very good alternative for a lot of people and a great trail/trainning saddle.

Hope that helps. ;)

I love wintecs, they really are great, I have a close contact saddle and at 3 years old it looked brand new (then I fell off and made a big scratch with my foot lol) the most important thing is that it fits your horse.

My first saddle was a wintec. Lasted ages, after years it still looked brand new. Sadly recently my horse grew out of it.
Due to the shape of my horses back saddles don't sit right, so after weeks of trying different saddles/pads etc, we found out a Thorowgood saddle that (with a small amount of padding) fits him perfectly.
It is also REALLY comfy and keeps my leg in a great position.

I reckon those are both great brands of saddle.
Good luck.

I tried thorowgood and really disliked the seat. However they fit really good a WIDE horse. I also tried HDR and liked it. HDR is my 1st choice, wintec is 2nd.

I have tried them all. I really like HDR - looks nice for the show ring, comfy seat, fit my horse really well. Wintec - exceptional quality for a synthetic saddle, comfortable and durable. Thorogood - Avoid this saddle. I HATE the seat and the riding position it put me in, and it didn't fit my horse very well. I hear they fit wide horses better.

If you are looking for a low maintenence saddle, one that I absolutely love is the courbetter magic. Courbette Sadddlery Company, Inc. Magic It is actually made of leather, but the leather is treated in such a way to make it totally waterproof. It will not accept oil, no oiling needed, and to clean it you use soap and water like a wintec. It's also very light weight. I don't know what your price range is, but I prefer the magic over the wintec. If you have an average size horse and not exceptionally narrow or exceptionally wide, the magic has an "e-motion" tree which adjusts and gives to your horse. It fit my thoroughbred who needs a standard tree, and also my fat little no-wither appaloosa who needs a xtra wide tree. Courbette is one of my favorite brands, I feel really secure and correct in a courbette.

Good Luck!

I actually found it depends a lot on your build. Friend of mine has thorowgood and she loves it too (said it was the best to fit her and her horse). When I tried it it felt too wide for me though.

I prefer Thorowgoods over Wintec, personally. The quality of workmanship is better.

I bought a Thorowgood last year, after a lifetime of leather saddles. I really like it. Like any saddle it took a little getting used to, but it fit my horse pretty well and that's the big point for me. I'm pleased with the quality of the Thorowgood, it's well made. Very comfy, very secure to ride in. I have a T4 GP model.
