Help with finding Youth/childrens English tack

My daughter really wants to show our Paint in 4H next summer. The problem is that she is still learning how to balance and use her seat. She isnt flopping all over , just needs to improve.
He doesnt neck rein , and even though we are working on it her instructor has some reservations about her riding him in a shank bit and being to heavy on the reins.
She really wants to ride him western but the 4h rules wont allow using a snaffle or riding 2 handed so we have been tossing the idea around about her riding english in 4H walk/trot .

So my question is what kind of an English saddle should I start looking for that is good for a youth/open and 4H shows?
Also what English attire should we be considering , jods with paddock boots?
Any insight would be helpful , as you can see I do not know much about showing English . My daughter is 10 yrs old.

on a side note: Her 4H leader is getting me a copy of the 4H show rule book too.

Thanks: )

I never rode 4H, but typically, younguns ride in breeches or jodhpurs (I like the look of breeches better) with Paddock boots and a jodhpur strap (it's a leather strap that goes around the leg, just under the knee - here's a link to one online: Jodhpur Knee Straps - Dover Saddlery.)

I don't know whether you'd need a coat and show shirt, or if a polo would suffice for 4H. I'd check your local tack shop if it is the former, they often carry consignment items, which are a lot less than new.

For a saddle, I'd suggest a small close contact saddle. Your trainer can help you figure out a good fit for your daughter and her horse, but depending on how big your daughter is, a 14 or 15 inch would probably be a good fit, with some room to grow - Mine was a 14.5 inch and it lasted until I was a about 15 (but I was tiny). Those come up on ebay quite often, and in good condition too, because kids get them and outgrow them at an astronomical rate.

Thanks , that def does help me out a bit.
Does the saddle color matter much at this age? Is a brown saddle preferred over a black one?

I know I need to look up all the rules but I may have the chance to check out some used items this weekend so hopefully I can find some good deals...

Thanks again Pooh LP
