Hey guys. I'm a newbie with this horse thing. I just recently became the proud owner of my first ever horse. My kids and i love riding her. She is a good horse and a sweetheart. My question is what kind of helmet do i need to get for my kids and I? I was thinking about buying them bike helmets to wear. Would that be ok? I was thinking it might be the cheaper way to go. Any advice???

As far as I know, as long as it fits snuggly, a bike helmet should work, no? Correct me if I am wrong, ok?
I wear a Tipperary and it is so light and comfortable that I forget I have it on. Tips are good for folks with elongated heads and troxels are good for folks with very round heads.

No, bike helmets are meant for riding bikes, not horses. They are designed mostly to protect you from falling over the handle bars or from impacts coming from the front.

With horses there are many more ways to fall off, so there needs to be more protection, from impacts to the side and back, as well as the front.

No, no, no! Bike helmets are not designed for the same impact as falling off a horse and will not protect a small child properly.

Troxels are inexpensive (around $30 for some models), adjustable and what I use for my 2 girls.

Helmets are not something to go "cheap" on. Little kids are top heavy and it's highly likely that they will hit their head if they fall.

Take your kids to a tack shop, they will try helmets on them and help you determine the proper size. My child was 5 when I bought hers and it wasn't the smallest in the store, so you should be able to find helmets.

Big "no" to bike helmets. They give no protection on horse. Look into Troxel - they have cheaper models ($30 or so) and some VERY colorful ones for kids. :)

I have the Troxel Spirit which has a dial-fit system in the back so it fits both me and my 9yr old daughter. The Spirit comes in pink, blue, black, white and green. There may be other colors. Look on Ebay. There are tons of Troxel's pretty cheap.

i may just be weird, but i have always been kind of against buying helmets off of ebay. they actually arent supposed to sell them like that because you could potentially buy one that was used, and the way they are designed, if someone takes a fall the inside fill of the helmet will break, but the outside may look perfectly fine. i know that at all of the consignment tack shops around here, they cant sell helmets because of that. just something to think about :)
