help with two things

Hi everyone,
My first problem is a bit.
I have a paint mare who has really good turns but her stops need improving she has a softish mouth but holds her head up high so it's hard to keep soft supple hands,
I ride stock so it's normaly not to much of a problem because I ride on a long rein but when i'm doing barrel racing jumping or even pollocrosse you need to have a light contact, So do you guys have any ideas on a very soft bit. I don't want to use a tie down running reins or a martigle.

Her head is very soft on her mouth (if that makes any seanse) if you stick the soft pressure on her mouth her head goes up she listens to my legs very well but I was just thinking if I had a really soft bit I could use a even softer pressure and she might not lift her head up so much.
But it's workable.................

My other problem is I have a swinging fender saddle and it is the best saddle ever unless you trying to do a nice rising trot.

The only way to get up is use the momentem of the horse[as you normaly do] but Crystal my paint has a very fast bouncy trot and to soften it I use my seat by going up and down softly, This I can't do in my saddle.

I have a dressage saddle but it doesn't fit her Qh frame It's a wintec and on the bigest frame it's still to small.Any ideas?

Thanks Ireland

I would say have her teeth checked....even though you shouldn't be the one picking up contact, that is for another discussion.

Are you referring to an Aussie stock saddle (with the poleys) or a western stock saddle (with the pommel/horn). If its the Aussie stock saddle, then I don't think you're supposed to be able to post in them. If you're referring to the western stock saddle, its okay to shorten the stirrups just a bit so that you can do a rising trot.

Shes just had her teeth done because i've had that problem before with other horses but no it's not that.

I'll post a link it's got swinging fenders and they are even more supple they just move all the time than a westerns fenders.

Trained
Yopu have inadvertently trained her to raise her head when there is pressure on her mouth. When she raises her head you probably loosen the reinsand that gives her teh release she was looking for. Don't change bits just change your tactics. When you put pressure on her mouth don't release it untill her head is where you want it and her feet are doing what you want. Start with her standing still and put some light pressure on the bit, enough to get her searching for releif. Keep your seat neutral. She may want to back up but don't let up untill her head comes down and her feet stop, then release fully. When you have that good then start doing at a walk and don't move on untill you have it really good at a walk.

As far as your other problem I think you'll find that your horses trot will feel better when she is softer though the head and neck. No horse will have a nice trot if it's nose is in the air.
