High gullet on a no wither horse?

First time putting my synthetic saddle on Clyde this afternoon - I've been trying to get a grasp on how to fit a horse with a saddle so that he will be comfortable, even found out today that there are draft specific saddles that I really want to look at soon.. but anyway.

The saddle seems like the tree/bars will fit good once he's lost some weight, but the gullet... or hand hole.. I'm not sure which is which~! The hole that allows for withers - is very high up off of him. Like I can easily, easily stick my whole hand in there, because he has basically no withers.

Can this cause any problems? Is there anything wrong with that, besides it looking silly? Maybe that too, won't look so pronounced once he's a bit skinnier and the saddle can come down more...

If the bars (part of the saddle tree that sits on his back) fit him well, then I wouldn't worry too much about the gullet. You should have at least 2-3 fingers of clearance between the gullet and the withers anyway. As long as the saddle fits otherwise, I don't see how a higher gullet would do harm.

My only concern would be that if it rises up too much, it could be a sign that the rest of the saddle isn't fitting like it should.

Well, I'm certainly still learning, but it seemed alright - it had plenty of room under the seat so it wasn't sitting on his spine at all. It did seem like his scapula might hit it, but I think if I just moved the saddle backa bit it would be fine, I maybe had it too far forward on him. I should've taken a picture! I wasn't thinking, it was a hot day.

Some saddles just have a lot of space between the bars and the top of the saddle.. for wither clearence I suppose.

My saddle is like that... it seems to be made to clear high withers but my horse has no withers!
