hobble experts please

Does anyone have a favorite brand or type of hobble? My husband took his horse on a few days trip. The horses were highlined at night but hobbled some to graze during the day. It was his first experience with them and he was not bothered by them, except for some rubbing behind the fetlock. They were the leather kind with chains in between. These were a friend's hobbles and if we were to do it again we would want to get our own. Some kind that does not cause chafing.

I use a six foot piece of cotton rope for hobbles. I wrap it once around the off-side leg then twist it together and wrap it once around the near side leg and then tie it in a square knot. The advantage to this is that they rarely slip off the cannon bones and they don't chafe. It can also be used for other things in an emergency unlike hobbles which are pretty much only hobbles.

Thanks. Sounds economical and like you say, has other uses in an emergency. I don't suppose you have a picture of that. Then I could see exactly where your horse wears them, how tight etc. do you go to the hardware store to get the rope? Last time I went to the hardware store they had about 100 kinds of rope. Do you do anything to the ends of the rope to keep it from fraying. Do you have a time limit for how long you will leave them on? Thanks again for your advice.

I've left them on for the better part of a day before. I like the horse to have it's feet about 6 inches apart. That's closer than they will be after the horse pulls everything tight. The rope I use was a cotton lead rope that broke at the very end. I tied a knot called a rosebud or a turks head on the end I can't remember which. I'll see if I can get a picture and post it here.
