Zeke, oh yes, I'm sure the little English riders were all about making sure you knew the proper terminology! We get it drilled into our heads when we're learning, so it's an automatic correction when someone gets it wrong!
As far as girth lengths go there are differences there too, depending on the type
of English saddle. For instance, dressage saddles have long billet straps, so dressage girths are much smaller than girths that go on regular English saddles.
I too prefer the girths with elastic on both ends. It's easier to get the girth tightened more evenly than one with just elastic on one end, or no elastic at all.
