How to cinch an English Saddle?!?!?!

Purchased the very first English saddle I have ever owned. Got ready to cinch it up and was short about 1 1/2 foot on the girth.

Sounds like your girth is far too small. We English riders also don't call it 'cinching'; it's 'girthing'.

If your girth is too small, take your saddle, put it on your horse with the saddlepad(s) you're going to use, and measure from the 3rd billet hole on one side, under the horse's belly, and up to the 3rd billet hole on the other side. This will give you a rough idea of how big an English girth you need.

It shouldn't be that small, you need a bigger girth.

Hahah. That is funny. Don't you hate when that happens? You pretty much have to have the right size, or it won't work, unlike western, where you can change the lengths of your off billet and latigo to accomidate a smaller or larger girth size.

I got one with elastic on both sides, and it also has little rollers on both (i think) sides so I can tighten from either side, so the girth stays "even".

I'm more of a western girl but teach english and western beginners, boy do those little english girls jump on me when I tell them to grab their cinch!

Someone mentioned how to measure for the girth which is great! I bet you bought an english girth in the same length you would've bought a western one? In my experience it seems the english girths need to be much longer, they're rigged to sit a little differently with the saddle and horse.

Zeke, oh yes, I'm sure the little English riders were all about making sure you knew the proper terminology! We get it drilled into our heads when we're learning, so it's an automatic correction when someone gets it wrong!

As far as girth lengths go there are differences there too, depending on the type of English saddle. For instance, dressage saddles have long billet straps, so dressage girths are much smaller than girths that go on regular English saddles.

I too prefer the girths with elastic on both ends. It's easier to get the girth tightened more evenly than one with just elastic on one end, or no elastic at all.

One option is to use a girth extension. This is just an extension of the girth strap and fastens as does the girth. I like using the girth extension as my mare doesn't keep a consistent weight and it saves me having to buy a variety of different sized girths.

Girth extensions only add 8 to 10 inches, Netty. If the OP has a gap of 1 1/2 feet, that really won't be an option for her. She's going to need a new, larger girth.

Oops apologies missed the feet bit! Yeah deffo new girth!

What kind of saddle is it may I ask? Just coz if it happens to be a Wintec, you can actually buy long girth POINTS that loop in so you can unloop the short points and loop in the long points then you wouldnt have to buy a new girth and you could keep your short girth on it. Otherwise yes you can get girth extenders and the add about 20cm approx to the length of the girth and if you need one on each side so be it. They are alot cheaper but if your girth really is super short I guess its the new girth or longer points thing to go lol.
