How to clean rough out leather?

Does anyone know how to clean rough out leather on a barrel saddle? And is there anyway to get the black marks off it?

Best way I've found is to take a wire brush to it. You can use either saddle soap or diluted dawn dishsoap to scrub any spots, but you really have to oil it well afterward if you use soap.
