how to pick a hat?

What makes a good western hat?ive been showin my horses for 3 ;yrs now and im lookin for a good quaility hat to take to shows and possibly rodeos in the future when I get my newest horse broke.any suggestions?i really like the black hats but I can't tell if ones good quality or not.thnx
